oltrarno is not a town, but just the part of florence situated on the south, beyond the river arno (in fact, litterally 'oltrarno' means 'beyond the arno'). oltrarno is famous for being the craftsmen labs district, and it's part of the historical centre of the city, the heart of florence, with its goods and its bads. in 5-10 min walking you get to the 'duomo' just crossing ponte vecchio with all the monuments around, language schools, museums, hotels, ecc. in all the area of the historical centre you will always see tourists and foreign people, so we can say it's the most 'international' part of florence, and that (in my opinion) 99% of the inhabitants are foreign students/workers and tourists. nightlife, expecially if you're not from florence, is in that area, with several pubs, american bars, discos and clubs. always in my opinion, if you like to feel like a part of an international milieu the historical centre is great to live in, but if you'd like to feel more like a florentine it's not the right place, 'cause no more 'real' florentine families live in the centre anymore... have a great time in your staying in florence next year, i hope this heleped you somehow!

thanks sheyla. youve been a great help. funny you should say that Oltrarno is full of tourists because of all the opinions i have received about the it, the assumption that it is the least touristy area in all of florence was more prevalent.
but i wont argue with you. thanks again. my worries have been assuaged.
my email greengreenhappies@yahoo.com lets keep corresponding, if you will... tree

...well, i was talking about the historical centre in the complex, not just about the oltrarno area! of course it depends on what part of oltrarno you go (ex: isolotto, viale europa...) you don't find tourists even thou it's on the south part of the river. on the other hand, if you go to the area close to palazzo pitti you'll meet only tousists... like everything in life, things can change looking at them by different points of view!!
with this 'wisdom pearl' (!!!) all i can say is that the good thing in all this story is that soon you will come and see with your eyes! bye bye,
